Something was amiss when the Nebraska Cornhuskers college football team sent their punting squad out to the field for the first time on Watch Vidocq OnlineSaturday: there were only 10 players, and no punter.

It was a gesture to honor former teammate Sam Foltz, who was killed in an automobile accident on July 23. The team stepped out onto the field and, with no one to kick the ball, let the clock wind down to a delay of game penalty.

Then, in an equally classy move, the opposing Fresno State Bulldogs declined the penalty.

When the teams resumed play a refreshed Huskers punting squad took to the field, with freshman Caleb Lightbourn delivering a 29-yarder for his first career punt.

Foltz, along with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler, were both killed on the evening of July 23 as they left a kicking camp in Wisconsin. Police said that Sadler, the driver, lost control of the car when he drove over wet pavement and struck a tree. Speed is said to have played a role in the crash.

Louisiana State University kicker Colby Delahoussaye was also in the car, though he survived the crash and was treated for injuries at a local hospital.

Foltz, who was 22, spent three season punting for Nebraska. He was the recipient of the Big Ten's punter of the year award in 2015, and was believed to be on the shortlist of names for 2016's annual Ray Guy Award, given every year to the top college punter.

In a show of solidarity with their grieving fellow players, the Bulldogs all adorned their helmets with "SF" stickers. Nebraska also paid tribute to its fallen kicker with a ceremony for the inaugural Sam Foltz Memorial Scholarship, which was given to junior kicker and Foltz friend Drew Brown.
