Per Lucasfilm, the movie will "introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy."
"It’s been a lifelong dream as a filmmaker to one day make a great fighter pilot film," said Jenkins, noting that she herself the daughter of a fighter pilot.
Rogue Squadronmakes Jenkins the first female director of a theatrically released Star Wars film, though not the first woman to direct a Star Wars story — Deborah Chow and Bryce Dallas Howard have directed episodes of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
Said Kennedy of Jenkins: “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”
Jenkins' Star Wars film is one of several in the works, along with an untitled project from Thor: Ragnarokdirector Taika Waititi.
Rogue Squadronis slated to hit theaters Christmas Day, 2023.
