The Watch Paradise Z OnlineMandalorianreturns to Disney+ for its second season on Friday, Oct. 30 — and while we couldn't be more excited to reunite with The Child, his father, and Carl Weathers, we're probably not alone in needing a little refresher on what last happened to them.
Here's where The Mandalorian left off — and what we can expect of Season 2.
No Mandalorian is actually named Mando, no matter how jauntily Carl Weathers says it. His real name is Din Djarin, and he wasn't born on Mandalore, but raised by Mandalorians after his parents died.
He also has a face! We here in the Milky Way galaxy knew that Pedro Pascal was the face behind the helmet, but true to his credo, our hero didn't reveal himself to any living being in Season 1. He only removed the helmet in life-threatening circumstances, and that was in front of a droid — a neat little loophole courtesy of IG-11 (R.I.P.).
Speaking of that nurturing IG unit — we didn't know what to expect with Season 1 of The Mandalorian, including how we'd bond with the characters. Of course we did, from the very moment that little green goober pulled back his blanket, but we met other characters who will be missed.
IG-11, voiced by Taika Waititi, proved to be an indispensable ally and a pivotal relationship for Mando, given his skepticism about droids. And of course there was Kuiil (Nick Nolte), the Ugnaught who gave his life to save Mando and The Child after choosing to help them with his hard-won freedom.
Season 1 ended with Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) surviving almost unscathed and wielding a Darksaber — a wicked cool weapon previously wielded in Star Wars: Rebelsby Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian.
Moff himself presents a formidable antagonist beyond anything we've seen in The Mandalorian. He served the Galactic Empire and is linked to the mass killing of Mandalorians (probably how he acquired the saber). In a Star Wars story without the Sith, he is our most fearsome and evil enemy, and he's hunting Mando and the Child both unfettered and undetected.
Season 1's finale also revealed that Cara Dune (Gina Carano) is from Alderaan, the home planet of Leia Organa which was destroyed early in A New Hope. Cara is a skilled warrior and mercenary, but this one word tells us she carries the weight of Alderaan's destruction, a mass genocide orchestrated by the Empire and Death Star. Cara and Mando have kept things copacetic and professional thus far, but we can expect them to bond further in Season 2, perhaps including over their shared trauma.
At the end of Season 1, the Armorer tasked Mando with guarding the child and returning it to its own kind. They spoke of "sorcerers" known as Jedi, a people who are now all but legend a mere five years after the Empire's defeat. As far as Mando knows, The Child is one of two Force-sensitive beings in the galaxy (the other being Luke Skywalker).
Little is known about Yoda's species, other than that there are multiple genders (thank you Yaddle), so for all we know they could all be Force-sensitive. Will Season 2 see Mando facing off against the burgeoning Jedi Order while Luke Skywalker works to rebuild it? Or will we find ourselves on a planet full of li'l Yodlings and passing out from the cuteness? Either is acceptable.
The Mandalorianreturns Oct. 30.
