Firefighters yesterday found Pietro, who was believed to be dead, when they heard a weak miaowing while accompanying the cat's owners to recover personal belongings from their house.

"He's in serious condition, but alive. He's called Pietro," said Italian animal protection agency ENPA, which is assisting animals rescued from the quake's rubble.

The lucky cat was taken to the local vet and then rushed to a clinic in Rieti due to his serious conditions; X-rays showed he had a fractured jaw and was struggling to eat. He's still too weak for surgery.

Earlier in September, Romeo, a Golden Retriever, was found under a pile of rubble.

Gioia, a pet cat, was rescued nine days after the temblor that killed 292 people.
